// The Moment I Knew Something Had to Change... //
This is long, but worth the read ❤
I was in last place, way behind everyone, and struggling hard. It was 2008, I was competing in a backcountry randonee ski race, vertical climb was 2,280 ft.. I legit didn't know if I would make it to the finish line without passing out, but there wasn't a clear way to turn back; I had to keep moving.
My energy was completely gone, I was light-headed, my muscles were seizing, and I still had a ways to go. I had been training and was in pretty good shape; what was happening?
Every step felt heavier than the last. There was no one in sight. I didn't even know if I was going the right direction at this point or if anyone knew where I was. Eventually I got to the top of the mountain and all I had to do was take the skins off my skis and ski down... a black diamond mogul run on my telemark skis, to a blue run that I was afraid if I got going to fast on the downhill, I might not be able to stop.
I had been exercising regularly, been fully able to hike for hours, I was following a healthy meal plan, and really thought I was doing everything right...
Where was I going wrong?
Well, like many of you, I had been immersed in food blogs and diet magazines telling me how I should eat. In an attempt to be healthy, I had lost perspective on how to properly fuel myself for endurance and recovery. I was trying so hard to do everything right, reach and maintain a healthy BMI, lower my BF %, and get the perfect body.
But, I ended up obsessed with the number on the scale, reaching a certain BMI, BF % and with a lot of fear and anxiety around food. I was no longer in touch with how my body felt, but rather what I saw in the mirror. And, I was constantly comparing myself to other women! Comparisonitis anyone?
After this race, I realized that if I wanted to be strong through training, and cross the finish line with a smile on my face - I needed to learn more about fueling my body, and less about dieting.
I realized I wasn't alone in this...
It's so easy to become absorbed in the diet culture and completely lose perspective. There is so much information thrown around on a daily basis - it's hard to know what matters and if you are doing it right.
That's why I'm here. It's been my mission ever since that race to learn what is needed to FUEL your body for endurance sports so that you are fully supported, energized, and recover quickly!
To stop struggling with fatigue, hitting a wall, and falling over at the finish line.
And.. most importantly, so that you are happy and able to do the things you loooooove.
Edited to add: 🏅I received first place female in the telemark category (I was the only one), $300 US Cash, an Outdoor Research Goretex Jacket, and I won a pair of MSR Snowshoes! I'll admit, it felt weird to accept all of this, but definitely made me feel recognized, which is exactly what I needed that day. 🙏
And... I went back after 3 years and CRUSHED it in less than half the time, because I learned how to fuel my body, mind & soul!
